How good or how bad is it to do science for science sake, are there any benefits involved or does it fall in the domain of evil scientists? Why do we have to do science which has obvious social implications and if one fails to put in perspective the use his/her research has on improving mankind, do we shelve that work! Has every work that started with an objective lived upto its expectations? Has mankind not benefitted more from the endeavours of scientists who wished nothing more than to understand or unravel the mysterious workings of Nature!
